Regional Affiliate Announcements 2010, CAGNY scholarship

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the scholarship is to further students’ interest in the property/casualty actuarial profession and to encourage the pursuit of the Casualty Actuarial Society designations.

ELIGIBILITY

The CAGNY Scholarship Program is available to any U.S. or Canadian citizen or holder of a permanent resident visa who is currently a full-time student at a U.S. or Canadian college or university, and will attend a U.S. or Canadian college or university as a full-time student for the 2010-2011 academic year. An applicant must have demonstrated high scholastic achievement and strong interest in pursuing an actuarial career in the property/casualty insurance industry.

Preference will be given to applicants native to the Greater New York area or attending universities in the Greater New York area.

PROCEDURE
An application is considered complete when it includes:

• The 3-page CAGNY Scholarship application.
• The recommendation form included with this application, preferably completed by an instructor who knows the applicant well.
• A current official transcript.

Completed applications are due by April 15, 2010. Additional applications are available from CAGNY and online at the CAGNY web site. Winners will be notified during May 2010 and will be invited to attend the CAGNY spring meeting.

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of individual merit. CAGNY expects to award up to $3,000 to one or more qualified candidates for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The 2010 Google Canada Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, through which we hope to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic background and demonstrated leadership. A group of female undergraduate and graduate student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a $5,000 CAD scholarship for the 2010–2011 academic year.

All scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google in 2010 for a networking retreat which will include workshops with a series of speakers, panelists, breakout sessions and social activities.


Eligibility requirements
Candidates must:

• Be a female student entering her senior year of undergraduate study or be enrolled in a graduate program in the 2010–2011 academic year at a university in Canada.
• Be studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related technical fields.
• Be enrolled in full-time study in the 2010–2011 academic year.
• Be enrolled as a student at a Canadian university. International students are eligible to apply as long as they are enrolled at a Canadian university.
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, or 75 %, or a B+.

Western Union Family Scholarship Program 2010: USA

The Western Union Foundation’s Family Scholarship Program is a new initiative for migrants, immigrants and their families.

The Family Scholarship Program is intended to help two members of the same family move up the economic development ladder through education. Scholarships may be used for tuition for college/university education language acquisition classes, technical/skill training, and/or financial literacy. For example, one family member may request assistance to attend college and the other family member may request assistance to attend English as a Second Language (ESL) course.

Eligibility

• All applicants must be age 18 or older.
• Country of origin for at least one of the applicants must be outside the United States.
• Application must include educational providers for primary and secondary award recipients (must be 2 family members).
• Scholarships may be used for tuition for college/university education language acquisition classes, technical/skill training, and/or financial literacy.
• Scholarships will only be made to nonprofit accredited higher education institutions and nonprofit training/educational providers.
• Western Union employees, Western Union Agents and dependents are not eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Criteria
The following criteria will be used to review applications:

• Families that have overcome barriers to pursue their educational goals
• Families that are involved in their communities
• Personal educational goals
• Plans to attain goals
• Plans for utilizing the scholarship

Scholarship amounts

Recipients are eligible to receive scholarships in amounts of $1,000-$5,000 per family. (For example, one scholarship recipient may receive $1,500 for an ESL course and the other recipient $3,500 for tuition at a university).

Process

Recipients are determined in a selection process independently managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE), an international non-profit educational exchange organization.
All scholarship awards will be paid directly to the educational providers. No payments will be made to individuals.

The U. S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has announced a competition to identify potential host institutions for the inaugural 2010 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq. This 10-week program will bring cohorts of Iraqi scholars in select fields to U.S. institutions for faculty development, research, and other guided study activities. The program is designed to equip grantees with knowledge and tools to build the capacity of universities in Iraq and to advance the education of future generations of Iraqis.  The program will lay the foundation for Iraqi scholars and their U.S. hosts to develop long-term institutional relationships and areas of cooperation that can be sustained after the grant period. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) will administer the program on behalf of the Department of State and is pleased to offer this opportunity for U.S. institutions to apply to host the scholars in the summer of 2010.

Anticipated Outcomes

• development of professional and academic knowledge and tools in the scholars’ field that can be applied to Iraqi higher education
• formation of networks between the Iraqi scholars and U.S. scholars across institutions and disciplines
• development of expertise in the scholarship of teaching, service learning, the use of technology, development and management of libraries and other collaborative methods of research, instruction, and student engagement appropriate to Iraqi higher education.

Responsibilities:

A highly motivated PhD student is needed to pursue doctoral research as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary project that aims to develop integrated spatial models of non-native plant invasion, fire risk, and wildlife habitat to support conservation of military and adjacent lands in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona. Specifically, the student will help develop novel field protocols and remote sensing techniques that identify non-native invasive plant species, based on both phenological and spectral differences, using ground data and satellite platforms of differing spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions. In addition, the student will use cutting-edge spatial models and tools to assess relationships of invasive plants to native vegetation communities, fire behavior, wildlife connectivity, and climate change at extensive spatial scales, and across multiple administrative jurisdictions. The successful applicant will work in the Lab of Landscape Ecology and Conservation Biology (click here) at Northern Arizona University (NAU), and will work closely with researchers from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and partners with the Department of Defense, National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Qualifications:

MS in ecology, botany, or related field with a competitive GPA and GRE scores (combined Quantitative and Verbal GRE scores >1200 [or average percentile score >75%]). Priority will be given to applicants with previous experience studying desert ecosystems (e.g., plant physiology, botany, ecology, and remote sensing or sampling techniques), quantitative skills, and/or a background in landscape ecology or conservation biology. A demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and experience conducting research in arid and semi-arid ecosystems is preferred, but not required.

Pacific Biodiversity Institute (PBI) is seeking an intern to assist with state-threatened western gray squirrel surveys in the Methow Watershed during the 2010 field season. The opportunity also exists to continue an internship or paid technician position at our office during the up-coming summer, to further work on western gray squirrels and learn other aspects of conservation science.

Project Description
The western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus) is listed as a state-threatened species in Washington State. The Methow Valley is home to the North Cascades population, one of the last three remaining populations of western gray squirrels in the state. We are conducting distribution surveys, nest count surveys, and education outreach in the Methow Watershed on the North Cascade western gray squirrel population. Our goals for this project are to conduct distribution surveys and relative abundance estimates that will augment work being conducted by WDFW. These goals will further scientific knowledge about gray squirrel distributions throughout the Methow Valley.

Another goal is to outreach to private landowners about western gray squirrel habitat and educate the local community about the about the status, threats and conservation needs of western gray squirrels. See the following web-site to review the State Recovery Plan.

 

Location: Interns will work out of the PBI office in Winthrop, Washington. Travel will be required to various locations (sometimes remote) in the Methow Valley and possibly the North Cascades Mountains. During some field excursions, camping may be necessary at the location of the field work.
Duration: The position will be for a full 6 months (March – August). At least 4 of the later months will be during the field season.
Compensation: Housing and an expense stipend of up to $624 per month will be granted to the intern, depending on financial need and experience. A bedroom is available adjacent to the PBI office, and kitchen/bathroom facilities are provided at the office itself. Travel reimbursement will be granted based on mileage traveled to western gray squirrel field sites with a personal vehicle (see WA OFM travel reimbursement rates – http://www.ofm.wa.gov/policy/10.90.htm).

Desired Qualifications
Coursework or experience in some (if not all) of the following areas is necessary Training will be provided in areas you do not have experience in.

• Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology, Conservation Biology, or Wildlife Management, or at least 3 years field experience in at least one of these areas.
• Familiarity with eastern Washington dry forest types
• Experience in field biology
• Experience using GPS equipment
• Familiarity with GIS concepts and applications

Other Necessary Qualifications

• Strong interest in wildlife ecology and management
• Physically fit, positive personality, and self-motivated
• Ability to learn quickly
• Ability to concentrate, output high quality work, and have fun in difficult situations

About Pacific Biodiversity Institute
The mission of Pacific Biodiversity Institute is to develop information and tools to conserve biodiversity and maintain ecological integrity. Central to this mission is sharing of these tools and provision of technical support to public agencies, educational institutions and other non-profit conservation organizations. Seney National Wildlife Refuge (Seney NWR) in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was established in 1935 by Executive Order for the protection and production of migratory birds and other wildlife. At nearly 96,000 acres, Seney NWR is one of the larger National Wildlife Refuges east of the Mississippi River and is exceptionally diverse in both the number of ecosystem types present and the number of wildlife species using these habitats. Seney NWR also administers island refuges in Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron, as well as Kirtland’s Warbler Wildlife Management Area in the northern Lower Peninsula. During the summer of 2010, Seney NWR will offer two (2) Applied Conservation-Restoration Ecology internships. These positions will last for up to 12 weeks, with some flexibility in starting and ending dates. The duties assigned to the successful applicants would be wide-ranging and should prepare the applicant for a future career in natural resources management and/or graduate school. Assigned duties may include

• assisting with general biological and ecological assessments and inventories (e.g., forest stand assessments and inventories, ecosystem mapping, bird surveys and censuses, frog and toad surveys, colonial waterbird surveys);
• assisting with habitat management (e.g., forest management, exotic species management, colonial waterbird habitat management); and
• assisting with on-going Refuge research projects.

Interested applicants should be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, have a GPA >3.0, be inquisitive, be physically fit, be able to work independently or in small groups, have excellent verbal and writing skills, have a valid driver’s license, and have a background in biology, botany, forestry, zoology, ecology, or a related field. Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated competence in conducting field work. Interns are compensated at a rate of $150/week for a 40-hour work week that may include working some weekends and evenings. The Refuge will provide dorm-style housing, laundry facilities, and a vehicle.

Tuscarora Nation Scholarship Program and Application

2010-2011 Academic Year

As agreed upon in the Relicensing Agreement between the Power Authority of the State of New York and the Tuscarora Nation, the PA is responsible for developing and implementing in consultation with the Nation, a scholarship program. The scholarship program will begin in the academic year following the Acceptance Date of the Relicensing Agreement and shall extend through the remainder of the New License term, which is approximately fifty years.

Terms of the Scholarship The program will provide, on an annual basis, two undergraduate full tuition scholarships to Nation citizens matriculating at any community college or university in the State University of New York System. The student shall receive tuition for the fall and spring semesters for four years.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Tuscarora Scholarship;

• the student must attend a SUNY school as a matriculating student; and
• be enrolled at Tuscarora.

Obligation

The recipient of the Tuscarora Nation Scholarship must fulfill a Community involvement obligation within the four years in which the scholarship award is received. Also, the recipient must remain a matriculated, degree seeking student at a college or university in the State University of New York system to continue to receive the award.
