Mixed Reality Interfaces for Digital Museums
This project will research a novel interface technology combining virtual reality, augmented reality (AR) with in-door and out-door location and context based systems to realise a mixed reality interface for digital museums and heritage sites. Over one-third of all Australian heritage-listed buildings are in Tasmania and there is considerable museum activity on Hobart’s waterfront and at Launceston’s Inveresk Precinct. As a result, Tasmania's disproportionate museum employment this project has many potential collaborators interested in enhancing both indoor museum experiences and outdoor heritage experiences.
Mixed Reality describes the broad field ranging from Tangible User Interfaces to Virtual Reality Interfaces. Museums and heritage sites have undergone considerable innovation with respect to their use of digital tools. It is now common for such a venue to have a rich web presence, information kiosks and other display technologies integrated into the venue to enhance a visitors experience. However numerous problems remain, the limited physical space available in such venues, the inability to see an exhibit or site as it once was due to the ravages of time and the inherent digital-physical divide that remains between the physical space and any digital information available about the objects, people or buildings that are or once were in the space.
